Disability Insurance
Disability Insurance, often called DI or disability income insurance, is a form of insurance that insures the beneficiary’s earned income against the risk that a disability creates a barrier for a worker to complete the core functions of their work. For example, the inability to maintain composure as with psychological disorders or an injury, illness, or condition that causes physical impairment or incapacity to work.
What is disability coverage?
This type of personal insurance policy protects you from loss of income if you become unable to work. Unlike workers’ compensation, disability insurance covers disabilities that originate outside of the workplace. With disability coverage, you can still receive a portion of your income while you are unable to work. This helps you cover your usual living expenses. There are two types of DI:
- Short-term: Provides coverage for a temporary period when you cannot work due to injury or illness. Short-term insurance generally offers a term of three-six months.
- Long-term: This coverage is for longer, or more permanent periods of disability. For example, long-term disability benefits may last until retirement age, another specific age, or recovery from your condition.
